  • Book by NJCU Professor First to Reveal Identity of America`s First Power Couple

James & Dolley Madison: America's First Power Couple, a comprehensive dual biography by Dr. Bruce Chadwick, a professor of English at New Jersey City University, has been published by Prometheus Books.

Drawing primarily from recently uncovered letters at the University of Virginia, Dr. Chadwick’s book is a reconstruction of the Madisons' personal and political lives.

In his 450-page book, Dr. Chadwick, unlike other historians, argues that the fourth president was not a boring, average one but a vibrant and tough leader who proved to be a very successful commander in chief in the War of 1812. Dr. Chadwick also makes the case that President Madison, the architect of the Constitution, owed much of his success to the social and political savvy of his wife and that she created the role of First Lady.

Dr. Chadwick is the author of 28 books on George Washington, the Civil War, and sports, including, most recently, Lincoln for President and I Am Murdered: George Wythe, Thomas Jefferson, and the Killing That Shocked a New Nation.

Often called upon for his expertise in these areas, Dr. Chadwick appears regularly on the History Channel and will again this summer on a special about the Presidency. He has also appeared as a guest scholar in “Moving Midway,” a documentary about the physical relocation of a southern plantation and an exploration of America’s slavery legacy, and “The Real George Washington,” a National Geographic documentary that aired on the National Geographic Channel.

A member of the NJCU faculty since 1994, Dr. Chad
