  • NJCU Receives Recognition Award in Governor's Occupational Safety and Health Awards Program

New Jersey City University has received a Recognition Award in the 84th Annual Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Awards Program. This marks the eighth consecutive year in which NJCU has been honored in the annual program.

Sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, New Jersey State Industrial Safety Committee, and New Jersey State Safety Council, the Program recognizes outstanding performance in the prevention of workplace injuries and illnesses.

NJCU received a Recognition Award for outstanding achievement in the prevention of occupational injuries during 2011. Recognition Awards are presented to a facility or company for achieving a lost-time incidence rate of 3.0 or less for a calendar year. NJCU’s lost-time incidence rate was only 1.5.

NJCU’s outstanding performance record is attributed to the institution’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Program, which contains the following core elements: management leadership and employee participation; hazard assessment, prevention, and control; training; and program effectiveness evaluation. Also part of the EHS Program is an EHS Committee. Comprised of management and labor representatives from across the campus, the Committee is chaired by Rita Oleas, NJCU director of environmental health and safety.
