Graduate Admission Requirements

  • Each of the graduate program options at NJCU has its own admission requirements. Prior to beginning your graduate application, take some time to familiarize yourself with your program.

    General Admission Requirements for Degree-Seeking Students
      

    • An application form
    • $55 non-refundable application fee 
    • Official transcripts from all colleges attended. 
      • Not required to submit NJCU transcripts.
      • An undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better on a 4.0 point scale is required for master’s degree program admission. 
      • A graduate cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 point scale is required for Civil Security Leadership, Management & Policy (D.C.S.).
      • A graduate cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better on a 4.0 point scale is required for Educational Technology Leadership (Ed.D).
      • All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by NACES members. Request a course-by-course evaluation that lists individual subjects and grades, and a final, cumulative, Grade Point Average (GPA).
    • Professional Resume or CV
    • Essay
      • A 250- to 500-word essay discussing your goals and objectives for pursuing admission to a degree program.
      • Applicants to School Psychology (P.D.) and Counseling (M.A.) must submit 500- to 1000-word essay. 
      • Applicants to Educational Technology Leadership (Ed.D) must submit 1000- to 1250-word essay.
      • Applicants to Civil Security Leadership, Management & Policy (D.C.S.) must submit 1000-word essay.
    • Request for matriculation form
    • 2 letters of recommendation from supervisors/professors (Please consult with the individual program requirements as to who should complete the recommendations)
      • You may use the recommendation form or submit recommendation letters on the letterhead.
      • Applicants to Educational Technology Leadership (Ed.D) are to submit 3 letters of recommendations.
    • Standardized Test Scores or test waiver 
      • Test waiver is not available to School Psychology (P.D.), Educational Technology Leadership (Ed.D) or Civil Security Leadership, Management & Policy (D.C.S.).
    • TOEFL or IELTS 
      • Required for all international students whose native language is NOT English. 
      • The minimum TOEFL score is 500 for the paper test or 60 for the Internet-based test. NJCU institution code for TOEFL is 2516.
      • The minimum IELTS band score is 5.5. 
    • Departmental interview (not required for all programs)
    • Audition or portfolio (not required for all programs)
    • Copy of teaching certifications (required for most of education related programs)
    • Supplemental items (not required for all programs) 


     Additional Requirements for Degree-Seeking Students in Performance and Other Departments
    If you are seeking admission to a master's degree program with a performance component (currently in music and in art), please note that the department may require a performance or presentation that meets the approval of at least three members of the department, including: 

    • The department chairperson
    • The department coordinator of graduate studies
    • A department specialist in the area of performance/presentation     

    After completing this requirement, request transmittal to the University Admissions Office with a written statement of approval of the performance or portfolio, signed by the members of the Department Evaluating Committee.

    Other departments may have additional requirements for admission into their programs, such as interviews or prerequisite courses. Carefully read the department's section in the graduate catalog.


     General Admission Requirements for Certification-Only Students  

    • An application form
    • $55 non-refundable application fee 
    • A 250- to 500-word essay discussing your goals and objectives for pursuing admission to a certification eligibility or certificate program. 
    • Transcripts from all colleges attended.
      • Not required to submit NJCU transcripts.
      • An undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better on a 4.0 point scale is required for admission. 
      • All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by NACES members. Request a course-by-course evaluation that lists individual subjects and grades, and a final, cumulative, Grade Point Average (GPA).
    • Copy of teaching certifications (required for most of certification programs)
    • Employment verification letter (required for Supervision program)
    • Supplemental items (not required for all programs)


     General Admission Requirements for Courses-Only Students  

    • An application form
    • $55 non-refundable application fee 
    • Transcripts from all colleges attended. 
      • Not required to submit NJCU transcripts.
      • An undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better on a 4.0 point scale is required for admission. 
      • All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by NACES members. Request a course-by-course evaluation that lists individual subjects and grades, and a final, cumulative, Grade Point Average (GPA).
    • Supplemental items (not required for all programs) 


     Requirements for Visiting Students
    Visiting graduate students must submit a NJCU Student Registration Form plus one of the following documents:

    1. A Permission letter from the University the student is attending stating the Course title(s), and authorized by a proper authority or
    2. A college transcript. The transcript must reflect Bachelor degree confirmation.

    The visiting student will then follow regular registration procedures. During the Fall and Spring semesters, documents are to be submitted to the University Admissions Office. During the Summer Sessions, documents are to be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by the respective deadline date. 


     Additional Graduate Admission Information

    Graduate Application Fee
    New applicants and former students who are re-applying must pay a non-refundable graduate application fee of $55. The fee is waived for applicants who have already received a master's degree or professional diploma from New Jersey City University.

    Graduate Admission Appeal
    Applicants who are not approved for admission for graduate study at the University have the right to appeal the decision if they believe there are significant factors that may alter the decision. The appeal must be made in writing to the Department Chair/Graduate Program Coordinator (as appropriate) within two weeks of the mailing of the decision.

    Graduate Re-admission
    Any student not enrolled in at least one graduate course in a fall or spring semester for three years must request re-admission. The student must submit an application for readmission and transcripts of any college work completed elsewhere in the interim. The student must qualify under the admissions criteria in the current Graduate Catalog. Readmitted students should note that graduate students who first registered in fall '98 or later are required to complete their program of study within seven years of starting (see Seven-Year Limit on Credits below).

    Immunization
    All students attending New Jersey City University must complete an immunization questionnaire; failure to do so could prohibit the student from attending classes. The immunization questionnaire is sent to all new students as part of the admission process (New Jersey Administrative Code 8:57:6.1-6.16), with instructions to return it to the Health and Wellness Center, Vodra Hall, Room 107.
