Book Lending Policies

The M. Jerry Weiss Center will permit all members of the New Jersey City University community, including all students, alumni, faculty, and staff as well as Advisory Board members and volunteers of the Center, to borrow books from the Center. Any individual borrowing from the Center will be expected to complete a review of the book to ensure that the Center fulfills its obligations to donors. 

LENDING POLICY FOR UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY MEMBERS

  • In order to borrow from the Center, NJCU faculty/staff/students must have a current and activated Gothic ID in order to borrow from the center. New students may present a schedule with an official photo ID (a driver’s license or passport) in order to demonstrate enrollment while waiting for their ID cards. Alumni must present a copy of an alumni ID card (available from the Office of Alumni Relations). Advisory board members and volunteers will not need to present their IDs.

  • When completing a lending transaction, all borrowers must complete the borrowing form with up to date contact information (e.g., personal and NJCU e-mail address, physical address, and phone number).

  • All borrowed books must be documented on the M. Jerry Weiss Center Borrowing Form which will also document cost of the book.

  • The borrower will be held responsible for the books. Any lost and/or damaged books must be replaced by the borrower. The borrower shall acknowledge his/her obligation to the Center and its materials by providing both printed name and signature/date on the borrowing form.

  • Borrowed books must be returned by the end of the semester.

  • When returning books, both the borrower and the staff member accepting the books must sign the borrowing form to acknowledge receipt.

  • To assist with any grievance that may arise from damage, loss, or discrepancies, the Advisory Board shall create a Grievance Committee effective the date of approval of this policy.

LENDING POLICY FOR EDUCATORS/LIBRARIANS/DONORS

The Advisory Board for the M. Jerry Weiss Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature at New Jersey City University have agreed to the following lending policy for educators, librarians, and community members. The term educator used herein refers to any individual employed by a public (including charter) or private school including administrators, teachers, and school librarians. The term librarian used herein refers to any individual employed as a librarian at a public library.

FOR EDUCATORS AND LIBRARIANS:

To borrow books, educators and librarians must provide both of the following:

  • an up to date employer picture identification from school or library

  • an up to date official ID confirming address (e.g., driver’s license or state-issued ID, passport, or visa) or recent utility bill

Educators and librarians will be entitled to borrow a maximum of five books at a time for a period of 30 days. When books are returned, educators and librarians are entitled to borrow an additional five titles.

When borrowing books, educators and librarians must complete a borrowing form and provide their signatures illustrating that they agree to the terms and conditions of borrowing, including replacing lost or damaged titles. Each cycle or 30-day period begins on of the date the borrower signs the form agreeing to adhere the policies of the Center.

At the close of 25 days, the administrative assistant of the Center will contact the individual with a friendly reminder to return the books to the Center, with a follow-up at 35 days if not returned.

Before being permitted to borrow additional books, educators and librarians must return those they borrowed in proper condition. Failure to return books or returning books in poor condition will result in an individual losing his/her borrowing privileges.

FOR DONORS:

Any individual donating at least $25 to the Center ($15 for retired education professionals) will be entitled to a Friend of Jerry card that is active for one year. This card will entitle the donor to borrow a maximum at a time for a period of 30 days. When books are returned, he/she shall be entitled to borrow an additional three titles.

To borrow books, an individual must present a photographic ID that verifies home address (e.g., a driver’s license or state-issued ID, a passport, or a visa).

When borrowing books, the individual must complete a borrowing form and provide his/her signature illustrating s/he agrees to the terms and conditions of borrowing, including replacing lost or damaged titles. Each cycle or 30-day period begins on the date the borrower signs the form acknowledging his/her responsibilities for the materials.

Dr. Weiss shall have the right to designate any one of his choosing as a Friend of Jerry.

The Advisory Board will create a grievance committee to hear grievances of borrowers should the need arise. The Board will revisit the policy annually to discuss the policy and any possible modifications/adjustments that may need to be made.
