Under current New Jersey State Department of Education policy, students who have successfully completed all of the requirements of a certification program and apply for certification are granted a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing. This Certificate will permit the certification candidate to seek provisional employment in positions requiring an instructional certificate. After the successful completion of one year of teaching (the Induction Year), the candidate will be eligible for a Standard Teaching Certificate. This Certificate is issued by the State Board of Examiners (N.J.A.C. 6:11).

Students who have completed an Arts and Sciences major may complete certification course work for the purpose of becoming eligible for an elementary or early childhood Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing. A similar option may be available for eligibility for a secondary education Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing. These would have to be investigated carefully and in detail with the Elementary and Secondary Department.

Admission to Education Programs is selective and influenced by state regulations. Students must check with the College of Education or the specific department for admission requirements in place at the time of application.
