The Early Childhood Education Department, (ECE), is accredited by
both the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education
(NCATE) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children
(NAEYC). The ECE Department offers an initial P-3 teacher certification
program at the undergraduate level.
The programs in early childhood education are designed to deepen the
understanding and perfect the skills of teacher candidates planning
to work with children from birth through eight years of age in a variety
child development and school settings. Emphasis is on current theory
and research in child development and application to early childhood
education practice.
The Early Childhood Education Department sponsors an applied research
conference in the Fall semester and an annual Early Childhood Conference.
Faculty members in the Early Childhood Department serve as counselors
for Kappa Delta Pi.
An Early Childhood Teacher Certification candidate's dual major must
be in one of the baccalaureate programs in the College of Arts and
Sciences. A candidate must complete a full academic major in one of
the following areas: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory
Sciences, Computer Science, Economics, English, Geoscience/Geography,
History, Mathematics, Media Arts, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Political
Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Spanish.
