The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education conducts
research on urban education and offers a variety of preparations
for teacher certification. Requirements for admission, fields of
employment, continued areas of education, and course requirements
are explained below.
In addition to its pre-service programs, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education offers in-service, professional development, and advanced study programs, courses, and workshops.
Candidates must also complete a full academic major corresponding to the
New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Areas: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Economics,
English, Geoscience/Geography (Earth Science), History, Mathematics, Music,
Physics, Political Science, or Spanish.
PREPARATION FOR N-12 TEACHER CERTIFICATION:
N-12 Art Teacher Certification
N-12 Music Teacher Certification
These are degree tracks under the Art and Music, Dance and Theatre Departments.
PREPARATION FOR CONTENT AREA TEACHER CERTIFICATION:
Certification requirements can be found under the following majors:
Biology
Physical Science: Chemistry or Physics
Social Studies: Economics, History, or Political Science
English
Earth Science: Geoscience
Mathematics
Spanish
ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR WITH K-8 CERTIFICATION (WITH DUAL MAJOR IN ARTS & SCIENCES)
NOTE: A student's dual major must be in one of the baccalaureate programs of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Completion of this program prepares one for a career as a public or private school teacher in Kindergarten through grade 8. Continued study may include a master's and/or doctoral degree in elementary education, early childhood education, urban education, English as a second language, special education, literacy education, etc.
The requirements for this major are:
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Eligibility for teacher certification by the New Jersey Department of Education is dependent upon completion of the curriculum requirements of a certification program, a passing score on the Praxis exam and whatever minimum cumulative GPA has been put into effect by the State at the time a graduate's application for certification arrives at the New Jersey Department of Education.
- General Biology and a physical science laboratory course (e.g., Principles of Earth Science; General Chemistry; Principles of Inorganic Chemistry; Basic Concepts of Physics)
- Developmental Psychology: Birth to Adolescence
- Sociology of the Family
- Problem Solving (MATH 205)
- Human and Intercultural Relations (INTD 149)
- demonstration of computer literacy and
- completion of each "All University Requirement" course with a grade of C or better.
Admission to Education Programs is selective and influenced by state regulations. Students must check with the department for admission requirements in place at the time of application. The current requirements include:
- submit a completed "Declaration of Education Major" form to P329
- complete the All University Requirement courses with a grade of C or better,
- have at least a 2.75 GPA and must maintain such a GPA for continuation in the program
- take two entry courses at the on-set of their education studies:
- EDU 250 The Education Challenge
- LTED 330 Focus: Reading, Language and Literacy and, must achieve a grade of B- or better in each of these courses,
- take the Diagnostic Praxis while enrolled in EDU 250 and achieve a determined
score set by the department,
- take and pass a writing assessment while enrolled in LTED 330.
