The Department of Computer Science offers a
major leading to a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The
major program is intended to prepare students for careers in business,
industry, and education as well as for graduate study. A focus of
the major program is the development of programming skills. The
student is also expected to acquire a conceptual understanding of
computer science that will be sufficient to permit rapid adjustment
to the specific needs of his or her future workplace. Through careful
selection of major elective courses, a student may design a program
that will prepare him or her for graduate study in computer science.
The Department of Computer Science currently
offers two minor programs. The Computer and Information Systems
(CIS) minor is intended to provide business majors and other students
with a competitive advantage in their job search. The Computer Science
minor is intended to complement a major in mathematics or the sciences.
The department offers courses in programming,
programming language concepts, software engineering, computer
architecture, artificial intelligence, operating systems, data
base design, and microcomputer applications, as well as theoretical
computer science. In addition, the department offers in-service
undergraduate and graduate courses for elementary and secondary
teachers.
