The Department of Criminal Justice/Security, a diverse learning community of educators and students in an urban setting, is dedicated to a multi-disciplinary education, merging theory and practice in service to society and the dynamic nature of criminal justice.

The Department of Criminal Justice/Security is the only academic program in New Jersey that has completed an Approved Program Review by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. The Department sponsors the Peter W. Rodino Jr. Institute of Criminal Justice, which is dedicated to improving the operations of the criminal justice system. The Department also sponsors a chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association's Lambda Alpha Epsilon for its students.

The Department of Criminal Justice/Security offers a Bachelor of Science degree program, which combines professional studies in the fields of criminal justice (law enforcement, courts, probation, corrections, parole and juvenile justice), and security (national and industrial).

The degree program is designed for individuals who are currently involved in the fields of criminal justice, juvenile justice and security, as well as for those students who seek careers in these fields. All course work on our main campus is offered on a dual track basis, whereby the student has the option to attend the same class at two different times during the same day, at either 9:00 A.M. or 7:00 P.M. This system was adopted to accommodate students with varying work schedules. All course work is also offered at our satellite program in Wall, NJ through the NJ Coastal Communiversity. Many courses are also offered on-line.

All Criminal Justice/Security majors who qualify may be eligible for the Cooperative Education Program. One of the major objectives of the program is to combine classroom learning with practical experience and to provide a realistic, in-the-field laboratory for skills and knowledge that ordinarily would not be acquired in the classroom. Students can earn up to 12 credits in Cooperative Education with a maximum of 6 credits in any one experience.

Students who choose to major in Criminal Justice/Security will be required to take a 39 credit specialization in one of the two professional concentrations:

-Criminal Justice (Law Enforcement, Courts, Probation, Corrections, Parole and Juvenile Justice) pdf

-Security (National and Industrial) pdf

All majors are required to complete a minimum of 39 credits of Criminal Justice/Security courses in residence.

Minor Concentrations
A minor sequence is also available primarily for those students who do not wish to major in Criminal Justice/Security, but are interested in intensive study in any one of the areas of professional concentration.

The Peter W. Rodino. Jr. Institute of Criminal Justice
The Peter W. Rodino, Jr. Institute of Criminal Justice was established on June 5, 1977 at New Jersey City University. The Institute promotes the urban mission of the University.

The Rodino Institute is dedicated to improving the operations of the criminal justice system and to supporting issues of social justice. It serves as a major avenue for an exchange of ideas between the community, the Department of Criminal Justice/Security and the University.

It seeks to accomplish this by mobilizing the resources of the University and by reaching out to the community-at-large in a variety of ways: by sponsoring conferences and seminars for professionals and the general public on critical criminal justice issues; by providing technical assistance to local police, court, correctional, probation, parole and juvenile justice agencies; by conducting innovative research and demonstration projects; and by assisting in developing opportunities for student internships in criminal justice agencies.
