The Health Sciences Department’s baccalaureate program in
health education is nationally recognized as a portfolio-approved
program for the basic level in Health Education by the Association
for the Advancement of Health Education, a specialty organization
for the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
An articulation agreement with the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey enables students to pursue
a joint BS degree through the Health Sciences Department. Students
enrolled in University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)
health related professions programs may articulate with the NJCU’s
health sciences program. Upon successful completion of requirements
at both Universities, a joint BS degree is awarded.
The Health Sciences Department offers seminars,
symposia and conferences several times a year on wide-ranging topics
in public health and related areas. Program faculty are actively
engaged in the scholarship of teaching and community service.
Dr. Gail Gordon has been involved in working
with the Hudson County School Nurse’s Association to develop
continuing education and establish a state-wide Honor Society for
NJCU graduates. She has also been involved in the Carnegie Campus
Project that is working on the scholarship of teaching. She is also
active in the American Public Health Association.
Dr. Lilliam Rosado is conducting a campus-wide
undergraduate survey to incoming freshman, to assess human relations
on campus. The New Jersey City University President’s Council
on Human Relations sponsors the project. She has also been involved
in the Carnegie Campus Project at NJCU.
Professor Marcia Pinkett-Heller has served
on a number of University committees, including Chair of the Curriculum
and Instruction Committee of the University Senate. For the past
twenty-five years, she has participated in ongoing research conducted
by the Department of Pediatrics, Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons on the role of asthma education in improving
care to children with asthma.
Professor Phil Congilose is responsible for
the development of on-line driver education courses. He organizes
conferences and continuing education for traffic safety educators
from New Jersey and New York. He is also active with the American
Driver Education Association.
Professor Denice Miller is an active member
of the National Association of School Nurses, the New Jersey State
School Nurses Association and the Bergen County School Nurses Association.
She assists with program development in continuing education for
school nurses. Professor Miller is responsible for advising students
seeking school nurse certification. She is also involved in the
School Nurse Honor Society, Carnegie Campus Project and Partners
for Innovation at NJCU.
The Health Sciences Department offers several
degrees-tracks. Requirements for admission, fields of employment,
continued areas of education, and course requirements for each of
these is explained in detail below.
An articulation agreement with the University
of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey School of Health-Related
Professions offers an opportunity for students to pursue a joint
degree in any of the following:

Bachelor of Science
in Health Sciences-Community Health
Completion of this major prepares one to assume entry level positions
as a health educator, health educator with a specialty (e.g., AIDS
educator), health planner, or health counselor. Continued study
may include a master’s degree in public health, health education
or community health. Requirements for admission include a 2.0 in
general studies. Students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average
in the major.

The requirement for admission to this major
is completion of the following courses: (1) All University Requirements
(AUR) including Intermediate Algebra or Fundamentals of Math; (2)
Human and Intercultural Relations; (3) Psychology of Self Development
and (4) Sociology of the Family.
Core Courses (39 credits)
Bachelor of Science
in Health Sciences-with Teacher of Health Education Certification
Completion of this major prepares one to assume the responsibilities
of a health education teacher certified to teach health to grades
K-12 in the state of New Jersey. The requirement for admission to
this major is completion of the following courses: Intermediate
Algebra, All Undergraduate Requirements (AUR) and a majority of
general studies courses. Students should take INTD 149, Human and
Intercultural Relations as part of their Area E requirement and
PSYC 150 0r 152 and SOCI 114 Sociology of the Family for the Area
B requirements.
Admission to this education certification program
requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Eligibility for teacher
certification by the New Jersey Department of Education is dependent
upon completion of the curriculum requirements of the certification
program, a passing score on the Praxis exam and whatever minimum
cumulative GPA has been put into effect by the State at the time
a graduate’s application for certification arrives at the
New Jersey Department of Education.

Post Baccalaureate
School Nurse Certification and Health Education Certification
Completion of this program prepares students for eligibility for
both school nurse and health education certification (K-12). However,
students who wish to get certified as a school nurse only, may take
HLTH 412, School Nurse Practicum which is held two days a week throughout
a full semester and includes both school nursing and student teaching.
In addition, attendance at three evening seminars on campus is required.
The requirements for admission to this major are a current New Jersey
license as a Registered Nurse and a bachelor’s degree (not
necessarily in nursing) from an accredited college or university.
Students who meet these criteria may opt to have their baccalaureate
transcripts evaluated by the New Jersey State Department of Education
(Office of Teacher Certification) or their county Superintendent
of Schools.
Admission to the education certification program
requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Eligibility for teacher
and school nurse certification by the New Jersey Department of Education
is dependent upon completion of the curriculum requirements of a
certification program, a passing score on the Praxis exam and whatever
minimum cumulative GPA has been put into effect by the State at
