The baccalaureate degree program is an upper division-nursing program
that is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Council
and approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. The Nursing Department
offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing to students who enter as registered
nurses. Requirements are explained in detail below. Articulation agreements
facilitate the transfer of students to the University from the area diploma
and associate nursing programs. The curriculum is organized around
a systems-developmental-stress framework and implemented as a community-based,
community-focused model. Faculty are committed to a student-centered
learning environment to meet the BSN program outcomes which include mastery
of research, assessment, communication, leadership, critical thinking,
integration of the liberal arts and self-actualization at the appropriate
levels.
Student activities in the Department concentrate on projects related
to health promotion in the community, by co-sponsorship of the New
Jersey City University Health Fair, participation in the annual Nursing
research forum and by providing opportunities to students to work with
faculty on continuing education programs. Other opportunities for student
involvement include invited membership in the Kappa Eta Chapter of
Sigma Theta Tau and a nursing honor society. The requirement
for admission to this degree-track is New Jersey licensure as a registered
nurse or eligibility to sit for the RN Licensure exam in New Jersey
before entering the first clinical nursing course.
Graduates of this major are prepared to assume the responsibilities of
a generalist in nursing, but are also prepared to assume leadership positions
in nursing as well. Graduates find themselves in all positions in the discipline.
Some examples of job choices include: community health nurse, occupational
health nurse, visiting nurse, hospital nurse, and leadership positions
requiring a B.S.N. The faculty encourages continued study that may include
a master's degree in Nursing. Students may select a number of advanced preparation
roles with various concentrations.
