This 15-credit certificate (12 credits in coursework and 3 credits for practicum) is designed to provide training for those who work with persons with disabilities who use assistive technology. This certificate has a cross-disability perspective, and each course focuses on persons with cognitive, sensory, and physical disabilities. The program is project based, and the practicum provides a capstone experience.

The Assistive Technology Specialist Certificate Program provides an exceptional opportunity for those who work with individuals with disabilities to develop expertise in assistive technologies. The training is applicable for special educators, general educators, physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, transition coordinators, and families. This program emphasizes implementation and design of assistive technologies that assist individuals with disabilities to be independent and engaged in activities in their homes, schools, work, and communities.

Schedule

Summer (6 credits) - EDTC 671: Introduction to Assistive Technology; EDTC 672: Hardware, Software, and Digital Communication AT Devices

Fall (6 credits) - EDTC 673: The Internet as Assistive Technology, EDTC 674: Assistive Technology Assessment and Evaluation

Spring (3 credits) - EDTC 675: Practicum in Assistive Technology (this 75 hour experience can be completed in a variety of settings including schools, rehabilitation agencies, clinics, hospitals, community centers, and other appropriate facilities)

The Assistive Technology Specialist Certificate Program includes 9 credits of coursework (3 courses) that can be transferred into the NJCU Master of Arts in Educational Technology program.
