About This Degree

The Associate School Library Media Specialist (ASLMS) certification program is for those seeking only the ASLMS certification and not a graduate degree. The program consists of 8 courses offered completely online. Students entering the program must have a 3.0 GPA (undergraduate or graduate). Students are also required to complete a 150-hour internship as part of the requirements for the last class in the program. Students acquire the skills and competencies for the certification that will enable them to develop and coordinate school library media services while learning to apply multimedia to the instructional design process. Students will then be eligible for the Certificate of Eligibility (CE) with the NJDOE. Individuals that already possess a teaching certificate also qualify for a Certificate of Advance Standing (CEAS). All coursework is project-based with immediate applicability to real-world practice. Once the CEAS is obtained individuals must complete a mentoring residency program for their first year for the ASLMS to receive their Standard Certification.

NOTE: Effective September 1, 2027, the New Jersey Department of Education will no longer issue the ASLMS endorsement. Only students enrolled in the ASLMS program at NJCU by June 1, 2023 will be eligible for the endorsement and coursework must be completed by August 31, 2027. The deadline to apply and enroll for the program for Summer I 2023 has closed. No further applications will be processed.
