As the Adapted Physical Education (APE) instructor, I believe that students with disabilities should experience a quality physical education program that meets their individual needs and provides them with the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential.
APE involves differentiating instruction so the physical activity is appropriate for a child with a disability. The main goal of APE at our school is to facilitate participation of students with disabilities in a safe and caring environment.
APE at AHM is a collection of sports, games and activities that are adapted or modified. Baseball is played with bigger bats, basketball with lower baskets and bowling with ramps.
Our gymnasium is fully equipped with adapted tricycles, a soft play area with a ballpit and slides, a moon bounce, a wheelchair swing and sensory area. Technology is incorporated in the APE program through the use of the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft XBOX.
A Harry Moore also participates in Special Olympics. The school has a team and actively participates in at least three events a year.
