NJCU'S Concentration in Alcohol and Drug Studies Program Satisfies Requirements for Certification as N.J. Alcohol and Drug Counselor
New Jersey City University is the first institution of higher education in New Jersey to offer a Concentration in Alcohol and Drug Studies (CADS) Program, a course of study that satisfies the 270-hour educational requirement for the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) credential of the Addictions Professional Certification Board of New Jersey, Inc.
The NJCU Program consists of six three-credit courses: "Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling I" and "Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling II" offered by NJCU's Department of Psychology; "Drug Abuse" offered by the University's Department of Health Sciences; and "Treatment Planning for Substance Abuse," "Case Management of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Clients," and "Professional and Ethical Responsibilities in Substance Abuse Treatment" offered by NJCU's Department of Sociology. All of the course credits may be applied towards a bachelor's degree.
Certified and Alcohol Drug Counselors work in various settings, including drug treatment centers, schools, nursing and group homes, retirement centers, and correctional facilities.
NJCU's CADS Program is also beneficial to those who wish to enhance their knowledge in the area of substance abuse and for those who wish to increase their employment marketability even if they do not intend to pursue counselor certification.
The Addictions Professional Certification Board of New Jersey, Inc. is the only recognized State-based certification board in New Jersey under contract with the Department of Health.
For further information call Dr. Fred Andes, coordinator of NJCU's CADS Program, at (201)200-2369 or e-mail him at fandes@njcu.edu.
