U.S. Department of Education Funded Program Provides Alternate Path to Teaching Certification in New Jersey; NJCUE Seeking College Graduates and Career-Change Professionals for Participation
The New Jersey Consortium for Urban Education (NJCUE), a program funded by the United States Department of Education that offers an alternate path to teaching certification in New Jersey, is seeking recent college graduates and career-change professionals who are interested in teaching in urban schools.
A collaborative project of the New Jersey Department of Education, New Jersey City University, Kean University, Montclair State University, William Paterson University, and the school districts of Jersey City, Newark, and Paterson, NJCUE will recruit, prepare, and support teachers in mathematics, the sciences, and special education to work in Jersey City, Newark, and Paterson.
NJCUE will begin in July with an eight-week program that will include course work, half-time student teaching, and mentoring. Participants will begin teaching in Jersey City, Newark, or Paterson in September 2003, attend classes one evening each week during both the fall 2003 and spring 2004 semesters, and participate in a two-week summer institute in 2004. Participants will be mentored during the first year of teaching and peer coached during their second and third years.
Requirements for the NJCUE program include: a bachelor's degree (a B.A. or B.S. in mathematics for a mathematics position; a B.S. in a natural or physical science for a science position; or a liberal arts degree for a special education position); a minimum 3.0 grade point average; and a passing score on the appropriate Praxis II examination.
NJCUE participants will receive 16 graduate credits applicable towards a master of arts in teaching degree at any of the four collaborating universities; a summer stipend before teaching; and opportunities to attend seminars and workshops. Those accepted for the NJCUE program must commit to a three-year period of teaching in the urban district in which they were hired or repay tuition and the stipend.
The NJCU coordinator of the NJCUE program is Dr. Ivan Banks, NJCU assistant dean of education.
All applications must be made through the NJCUE website at www.state.nj.us/njded/njcue by April 1. For further information call the Center of Pedagogy at MSU at (973)655-7264.
