NJCU Professor Illustrates Two Books for Poet Alan Britt
Dr. Jose Rodeiro, an associate professor of art at New Jersey City University, has illustrated the covers of two books by American poet Alan Britt: Amnesia Tango published by Cedar Hill Publications and Infinite Days published by Bitter Oleander Press.
Both book covers depict various Latin dance forms. For the cover of Infinite Days, Dr. Rodeiro created an oil painting that portrays a Gypsy performing the Spanish Flamenco dance known as fandango on the Plaza de San Vicente in the Cornet-y-Mas area of Saria, a Barcelona suburb that is the heart of an emerging 21st century art scene. Dr. Roderio’s pen-and-ink cover work for Amnesia Tango depicts two Argentinean Tango dancers who are caught in a world of passion on a scarlet-red surface.
Considered the most published “little magazine” poet in America, Mr. Britt has authored six volumes of poetry and has edited two poetry anthologies for Black Moon Press of Baltimore. He is closely identified with such leading figures of his generation as Robert Bly, David Ignatow, Louis Simpson, Colette Inez, Silvia Scheibli, Nico Suarez, and Duane Locke. At Johns Hopkins University, Mr. Britt was a protégé of African-American poet Elliott Coleman.
An award-winning painter, Dr. Rodeiro, who joined the NJCU faculty in 1993, has taught watercolor and other studio courses and also serves as coordinator of art history, teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Dr. Rodeiro is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and has been the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Fulbright Program, and Institute for International Education.
A Mendham resident, Dr. Rodeiro holds a Ph.D. from the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University, an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute, and a B.A. from the University of Tampa.
