Giving to New Jersey City University

The NJCU Foundation, an independent tax-exempt charitable organization, is the designated agency to solicit, receive, and administer contributions from private sources for the benefit of the University. These contributions can be in the form of cash, negotiable securities, equipment, or real property, and can be made as outright gifts which come to the University immediately, or through a variety of planned giving arrangements which benefit the University at a future date. Gifts are administered as prescribed by donors; they can be expended for direct support of programs or established as a permanent endowment which will generate income many years into the future.

The New Jersey City University Annual Fund includes the following traditional areas of support:

  • University Unrestricted Fund
  • Scholarship Fund
  • Library Fund

When you make a gift to any of these areas, you are supporting the NJCU Annual Fund. The Fund is staffed by the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, which coordinates annual fund-raising for the areas listed above and serves as a resource for alumni and other friends of the University who have questions about any aspect of their giving.

Endowment, Capital, and Special Project Funds are also an important element in creating excellence at NJCU. These can include support for permanent named scholarship funds, endowed faculty chairs, building and equipment funds, and a whole host of special projects that can assist the University and individual departments in strengthening teaching and learning.

WHY SHOULD I GIVE TO NJCU?
Here are some of the many reasons people like you give to New Jersey City University:

Pride
In just 70 short years NJCU has grown from a normal school to a comprehensive university with a broad range of high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs a "home-town institution" that is nationally recognized as a model for innovative urban higher education. Its alumni are a distinguished group who have made signal contributions to their communities and the nation.

Nostalgia
Good times, close friendships, freedom to explore, the adventure of learning all provide warm memories of our college years that can last a lifetime. Giving to the University is one way to "stay connected" to this exciting time in your life.

Gratitude
Many graduates recognize that they owe much of their present success to the solid foundations they received at NJCU, which got them off to a great start in their subsequent careers. They know that the University offered them opportunities that were not available anywhere else. Being a donor is a wonderful way to say "Thanks!"

Altruism
As an urban institution, NJCU reaches out to the new melting-pot immigrants and their children, inner-city youth, first-generation college students, working adults seeking to earn their share of the American dream. Helping these students is a great way to build a better future for society.

Pragmatism
Let's be blunt everyone knows that as an institution's reputation for academic excellence grows, so do its graduates' success and accomplishment in every phase of life. The bottom line: investing in NJCU's future strength helps enhance the value of your own degree.

Love
Then there are those people who can't explain it any other way "I just love this place!" For them, New Jersey City University is a priceless treasure that holds a special place in their hearts.

HOW DO I GIVE TO NJCU?
There are many avenues for alumni and friends to show their support for New Jersey City University:

  • Write a check. Every contribution is an important recognition that you recognize the value of NJCU as an educational and community resource. Donations are tax-deductible, and help the University in countless ways to maintain its position as a center of academic quality .
  • Give appreciated securities or property. Stocks, real estate, art or other valuables can be used instead of cash to contribute to the University's well-being, and can also provide additional tax benefits to the donor. You not only receive an income-tax deduction for the full fair-market value of the gift, you also avoid paying capital gains tax if the property has increased in value since you first acquired it. (Here's a hint: If the property has declined in value since you acquired it, you can sell it, donate the proceeds to NJCU as a tax-deductible gift, and claim the loss on your income tax.)
  • Join an NJCU Donor Club. Yearly membership in one of these special donor clubs expresses your unique commitment to the institution, and helps form a solid bedrock for the University's financial health.
President's Club: Annual gifts of $5,000 and above.
University Associates: Gifts of $2,500 to $4,999.
Gothic Club: Gifts of $1,000 to $2,499.
Tower Club: Gifts of $500 to $999.
Knight Club: Gifts of $250 to $499.
Century Club: Gifts of $100 to $249.
  • Consider a "planned gift." Many donors find that, in addition to contributions for immediate use, arranging for a future gift is an easy and cost-effective way to help the University. One very popular method is to include a bequest in your will, but there are a number of other planned giving vehicles available to donors, such as charitable trustsand gifts of life insurance, that can generate substantial financial and tax benefits to you or your loved ones. But best of all, you get the immense satisfaction of knowing that your generosity and foresight today will play a role in the life of a great University well into the future.
