U.S. Department of Education Awards $571,129 Grant to NJCU, HCCC, and PCCC for Collaborative Project
New Jersey City University, Hudson County Community College, and Passaic County Community College have been awarded a $571,129 grant by the United States Department of Education through its Strengthening Institutions-Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) Program. This funding, which will cover a one-year period beginning on October 1, is expected to be the first in what will be a five-year grant.
The federal grant represents 82.5 percent of the total funding necessary for the first year of "Improving the Pipeline for Latinos in Education: A Systemic Collaborative Among Three Urban HSIs," a project on which New Jersey City University, New Jersey's only public four-year HIS and the only state university with an explicitly urban focus, and the two distinctly urban community colleges, will work as partners.
The three New Jersey institutions will contribute $121,104, 17.5 percent of the $692,233 total cost for the first year of the project.
"Improving the Pipeline for Latinos in Education: A Systemic Collaborative Among Three Urban HSIs" will address the unacceptably low rates at which Latino and other minority, low income, urban students reach and perform in postsecondary environments by both better preparing and increasing the number of qualified Latino teachers.
Through a single programmatic approach, "Improving the Pipeline for Latinos in Education: A Systemic Collaborative Among Three Urban HSIs" will improve students' academic performance and will significantly increase: the number of Latino students who transfer from two-year colleges to teacher preparation programs at four-year colleges and universities; the number of students who enter the transfer/baccalaureate "pipeline"; and the number of faculty who utilize instructional methods that have proven successful with under-prepared and/or ESL students.
The project will also provide professional opportunities for faculty from all three institutions. NJCU, HCCC, and PCCC faculty will also work together on curricular alignment.
