NJCU Receives $172,031 Grant from U.S. Department of Education to Internationalize Teacher Education

New Jersey City University has been awarded a $172,031.00 Title VI Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program Grant for 2002-2004 by the United States Department of Education.

The two-year award will provide half of the funding for "Reaching Across Borders: Internationalizing Students in K-12 Urban Teacher Education," a project that will address the serious local and national need for an international approach to teacher education.

New Jersey City University will provide matching funds for the innovative project that will build upon the work of a previous Title VI grant-funded project that internationalized NJCU's broad-based curriculum.

The new initiative will include the internationalization of the curriculum for education students; the creation of a student-run symposium that addresses the intersections of international and multicultural outlooks; and the selection and acquisition of library materials that support international studies.

NJCU's curriculum for education students will be internationalized by a cadre of 13 faculty from the University's College of Education and College of Arts and Sciences. The NJCU faculty will infuse 17 courses, including several language courses, with internationally informed approaches and then be the first to teach the revised courses. In addition, NJCU faculty involved in the project will serve as student teacher internship supervisors, take leadership roles in the organization and presentation of five campus International Development Workshops, and publish a journal on their experiences internationalizing student teacher supervision.

The student-run symposium on international and multicultural outlooks will be designed, organized, and conducted by NJCU students with assistance from the vice president and staff of the University's Division of Student Affairs.

The symposium, which will be linked to NJCU's "Human and Intercultural Relations" course, will evolve into an applied learning workshop for new student orientations.

Faculty involved in the project and NJCU librarians will work together to select and purchase materials that support international course development and an international curriculum.

Project director is Dr. Donna Farina, an NJCU assistant professor of multicultural education. Coordinators of the International Development Workshops will be Dr. Audrey Fisch, an NJCU associate professor of English, and Dr. Carrie Robinson, an NJCU professor of literacy education.

Other NJCU faculty involved in the project are Dr. David Blackmore, an assistant professor of English; Dr. Basanti Chakraborty, an assistant professor of early childhood education; Dr. Ellen Garvey, an associate professor of English; Dr. Saigeetha Jambunathan, an associate professor of early childhood education; Dr. Cora Lagos, an assistant professor of modern languages; Dr. James Lennon, an associate professor of psychology; Dr. Irma Maini, an assistant professor of English; Dr. Pargellan McCall, a professor of multicultural education; Dr. Vesna Radanovic-Kocic, an assistant professor of multicultural education; and Dr. Christopher Shamburg, an assistant professor of educational technology.
