NJCU Awarded $1.5 Million Grant by U.S. Department of Education to Prepare LEP
New Jersey City University has been awarded a $1.5 million grant by the United States Department of Education for Project TELL (Teaching English Language Learners in the General Education Classroom).
Project TELL will create a five-year partnership between the teacher education/professional development providers, New Jersey City University, Hudson County Community College, and Passaic County Community College, and five urban school districts in Hudson and Passaic Counties to improve educational opportunities for limited English proficient (LEP) children by better preparing their teachers.
The Project has three specific goals: establish a professional development program for urban teachers of LEP students that addresses research-based instruction in reading and other skills, including teaching content areas to second language learners; increase the number of pre-service teachers who are trained and licensed to work with LEP students in urban schools; upgrade the qualifications and skills of educational paraprofessionals through professional development focused on working with LEP students.
Project TELL will utilize the resources of NJCU's Department of Multicultural Education and the English as a Second Language Programs of Hudson and Passaic County Community Colleges. The three partners are federally designated Hispanic Serving Institutions.
Dr. Elba Herrero, an NJCU assistant professor of multicultural education, is author and director of Project TELL.
There are currently more than 16,000 LEP students in Hudson and Passaic Counties. The number of kindergarten through twelfth grade students who speak a language other than English, as well as the number of languages spoken by them, increase each year.
