The Impact of Mega Ships - Guest Speaker: Jaesil Hwang

    United States
    Time:1:00 PM2:00 PM

Jaesil Hwang will discuss her current research on the impact of megaships on the major ports and the containerized shipping industry. Jaesil Hwang is a Management Visiting Scholar at NJCU School of Business and a broadcasting reporter of Munhwa Broadcasting Corp. (MBC) in Busan, Korea. Her research focuses on the governance of marine ports, terminals, and price structure in the U.S. and Korea.

Container carriers have grown larger to achieve the economy of scale since the financial crisis in 2008. The global financial crisis has invoked the logistics and transportation cost war. The trend of megaships has seriously increased competition among all of the world marine ports. To cope with this megaship trend, the major hub ports have modernized their facilities and maintained deep waters, resulting in calling more mega vessels. The presentation will include a brief introduction of this megaship trend and her preliminary findings.
