    Margaret Williams Theatre

Convocation marks the traditional beginning of the academic year and offers a unique opportunity to rededicate ourselves to NJCU’s mission of teaching, research and service. The ceremony serves as a proud reminder of the tremendous depth of knowledge of our faculty, and of their commitment to the NJCU community.

The 2016 Convocation ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 5 at 2 p.m. in the Margaret Williams Theatre on the Second Floor of Hepburn Hall. Faculty, staff and students are invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony.

    Keynote Address

The keynote address will be delivered by Richard Blanco, a noted Cuban-American poet.

Blanco’s first book of poetry, City of a Hundred Fires, was published in 1998 to critical acclaim, winning the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize from the University of Pittsburgh Press. The collection explored his cultural yearnings and contradictions as a Cuban-American and captured the details of his transformational first trip to Cuba, his figurative homeland. After the success of his first book, Blanco took a hiatus from his engineering career and accepted a position at Central Connecticut State University as a professor of creative writing.

In 2012, President Barack Obama selected Blanco to serve as the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history, joining the ranks of such luminary poets as Robert Frost and Maya Angelou. The youngest, first Latino, immigrant, and gay person to serve in such a role, Blanco read “One Today,” an original poem he wrote for the occasion, at Obama’s inauguration ceremony on January 21, 2013. In For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey (2013), he shared the emotional details of his experiences as inaugural poet and reflected on his understanding of what it means to be an American.

Since the inauguration, Blanco has been named a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow and has received honorary doctorates from Macalester College, Colby College and the University of Rhode Island.

    Procession and Regalia
Convocation begins with a procession of faculty and professional staff in academic regalia.
Faculty and professional staff who are processing should gather at 1 p.m. in the Gothic Lounge for academic regalia pick-up and robing. Participants will begin lining up at 1:30 p.m., and the procession into the ceremony will begin promptly at 2 p.m.

    General Attendance
The Margaret Williams Theatre will open for general attendance at 1:30 p.m. Staff should check with their supervisor before attending.

    Community Reception
Immediately following the Convocation ceremony, a reception for attendees will be held in Raines Plaza.
