    Convocation 2017

    Location:
    Margaret Williams Theatre
    Time:2:00 PM2:00 PM

Convocation marks the traditional beginning of the academic year and offers a unique opportunity to rededicate ourselves to NJCU’s mission of teaching, research and service. The ceremony serves as a proud reminder of the tremendous depth of knowledge of our faculty, and of their commitment to share this knowledge with the NJCU community.

The 2017 Convocation ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 5 at 2 p.m. in the Margaret Williams Theatre on the Second Floor of Hepburn Hall.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Yvonne S. Thornton, a double board-certified specialist in obstetrics, gynecology, and maternal-fetal medicine who has been an outspoken advocate on women’s health issues.

Thornton is the first black woman in the United States to be board-certified in high-risk obstetrics and to be accepted into the New York Obstetrical Society. She has been listed in New York Magazine as one of the top 10 maternal-fetal medicine specialists in New York City.

Thornton is the national best-selling author of the memoir, The Ditchdigger’s Daughters, published in 1995. Featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the book is a tribute to Thornton’s parents and was translated into 19 languages, adapted for a World Premiere Movie, and nominated for the Peabody Award and the Cable ACE Award for Best Picture. She also authored the medical text, Primary Care for the Obstetrician and Gynecologist.

As senior perinatologist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, Thornton established and developed the program for a new form of early, prenatal diagnostic testing known as CVS, or, chorionic villus sampling.

Faculty, professional staff and students are invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony.

A line from one of Rudyard Kipling’s poems, “a rag, a bone, a hank of hair” is an expression used in the artist’s family to mean, “You look haggard.” Painted, cut up, and sewn together, Burton’s canvases portray beautiful grid patterns that do not entirely match up and are as imperfect as the expression.

The three artists known as Mustart (NJCU BFA 2009), Clarence Rich, and Distort, grew up with the visual language of graffiti, yet formally studied painting. This trio’s take on Street Art -- the most recent movement to have gained international popularity in the lineage of art history -- reflects the evolution of this phenomenon, connecting classical art with contemporary street culture.

    Jersey City Together

    Time:7:00 PM7:00 PM

Join 1,000+ Jersey City Together leaders on Monday, October 2nd!

Co-sponsored by NJCU’s Hagan Africana Center and Jersey City Together

We're less than two weeks away from Jersey City Together's action with 1,000+ leaders and our mayoral candidates on Monday, October 2nd from 7:30-9pm at NJCU's Margaret Williams Theatre (in Hepburn Hall, 2039 Kennedy Blvd, Jersey City, NJ 07305)! We hope you are planning to attend & inviting others to join you! Please plan to arrive by 7pm.

Here are some details & what to expect:

    • Both candidates for mayor are confirmed to attend and speak to Jersey City Together's priorities (housing & homelessness, education & youth, and safety, policing & criminal justice). We expect this will be the largest event with both candidates in Jersey City pre-election.
    • We will speak in particular about the housing crisis facing our city -- with tens of thousands of households in housing stress -- and concrete opportunities that exist to begin to address it.
    • County Prosecutor Esther Suarez will also attend and be asked to make specific commitments to work with us in the coming year.

In the meantime, please download a flyer here and invite others to join you. Please carpool, but parking will be free with validation & available on a first come, first serve basis at the NJCU lot. More details here.

If you have questions, email jerseycity@njtogether.org.
