University Mission

The mission of New Jersey City University is to provide a diverse population with access to an excellent university education, and the support services necessary for success. The University is also committed to the improvement of the educational, intellectual, cultural, socio-economic, and physical environment of the surrounding urban region. Through implementation of this mission, New Jersey City University will become the best urban university in the United States.

In conjunction with each of the liberal arts and professional studies programs is the opportunity for a practical application of the knowledge and skills gained in class. Paid internships allow students to develop their talents in professional settings. The New Jersey City University Cooperative Education Program is a national leader in this merging of academic development and applied learning.

The synthesis of academic knowledge and professional practice is appropriate for the students at New Jersey City University. Most are the first in their families to attend college and most view higher education as an essential step in professional preparation. Applied learning is an effective bridge between classroom instruction and the world of work, providing students with a solid base of professional experience to reinforce their intellectual and academic growth.

The student body of the University reflects the social and cultural diversity of the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area, and includes a significant number of international students. This cultural richness is a unique adjunct to the educational environment and supports the preparation of students for a pluralistic society and global economy.
The University provides an environment that nourishes student development. Its compact campus and low student/faculty ratio foster a congenial atmosphere. Through individual support services in such areas as orientation to college, academic advisement, personal counseling and career counseling, the University helps students to define and expand their personal and academic goals. Extensive and varied social and cultural activities enhance the academic, professional and personal growth of students.

The University is committed to improving the quality of life in its urban community and works along with other colleges and universities in the county, businesses, community organizations, government agencies, and local school districts to accomplish this. As it moves towards its goal of being the best urban college, it will continue to offer its diverse population a comprehensive range of liberal arts and professional programs, strengthened by an emphasis on applied learning. It is an institution in and of the city, in which the citizens of New Jersey can take pride.
