Established by the Higher Education Restructuring Act, the Commission on Higher Education in New Jersey, along with the New Jersey Presidents Council, has authority for coordination of higher education in New Jersey. The Commission is presently composed of 15 members. In general, the Commission is responsible for statewide planning, advocacy, and other long-term responsibility for improving New Jersey higher education. As prescribed in law (P.L. 1994, c. 48), some of the Commissions responsibilities include:
- planning for higher education on a statewide level including the development of a comprehensive master plan;
- advocating on behalf of higher education including informing the public of needs and accomplishments of higher education in New Jersey;
- making recommendations on higher education initiatives;
- making final administrative decisions over institutional licensure and university status;
- making final administrative decisions over a change in the mission of an institution;
- reviewing requests for state support from the institutions.; and
- communicating with the state Board of Education and Commissioner of Education to advance public education at all levels including articulation between the public schools and the higher education community.
