Summer Compensation for Department Chairpersons

Sample Agreement Compensation for Department Chairpersons, (Summer 1999)

The following stipulations represent the Agreement reached between New Jersey City University and AFT Local 1839 for the compensation of department chairpersons during the Summer 1999:

  1. The Summer 1999 is defined as the period May 18, 1999 to August 31, 1999.

  2. Each department chairperson or his/her designee from the department shall be compensated at a rate of $725.00 per credit hour. In departments where a change of chairperson takes place on June 30, 1999, the compensation will be split equally between the outgoing and incoming chair.

  3. Department chairs will be expected to perform the following activities:
    • Recruitment of adjuncts in preparation for the Fall Semester.
    • Supervision of support staff.
    • Evaluation of adjuncts.
    • Provision of special assistance for certification problems.
    • Substantial involvement with laboratories, studios and/or significant responsibility for equipment.

  4. Department chairs will not be expected to be available for chair meetings during July and August.

  5. It is agreed that each department will be assigned the following rate for Summer administrative duties:

  6. Where the needs of a department do not require a chairperson to be available during the Summer, no compensation will be awarded.

  7. This Agreement does not impact on the current assignment of released time for department administration now allocated during the Fall and Spring semesters.

  8. Chairpersons performing administrative duties during the Summer 1999 are to note their activities and assigned credit hours on faculty assignment sheets and forward them to the appropriate dean.

  9. Each department chairperson will provide the appropriate dean with telephone numbers at which he/she can be reached during the period of May 18, 1999 to August 31, 1999.

  10. During the 1999-2000 year the University and AFT Local 1839 will review the effectiveness of department administration and assigned compensation for the Summer 2000.

  11. This Agreement does not constitute a precedent in any other matter.
