General Studies classes that are also required for art teacher certification are as follows: Intermediate Algebra (112), Biology (103, or 130)), Developmental Psychology, (150 or 152)Sociology of the Family and Human (114) and Intercultural Relations (149). ATCP candidates are allowed to use World Art I, World Art II, Drawing and Composition I, and Ceramics I to fill 9 credits area C requirements.
Additional art classes may be required to fulfill studio requirements for certification. Only after the candidate has fulfilled most requirements for the art major, can they begin taking the certification program classes.
Three sequential field experiences, the Education Challenge, Practicum and Internship I are required. The Practicum class requires that students spend one full day a week at their school placement for 13 weeks and a full 2 weeks at the end of the semester. The College of Education Writing Assessment must be passed before a student can be enrolled in the Practicum. The Internship I course requires a five-day a week commitment for the entire semester. Students must apply for these field experiences one year in advance of the placement with the advisement of the Art Teacher Certification Coordinator. A mantoux test must be administered within six months of each placement. The Praxis, Art Content Knowledge must be passed with the minimum grade established by the State of New Jersey before a student can be enrolled in the Internship.
Focus: Development Behavior and Learning class, taken in conjunction with the Practicum, connects issues and concepts of human learning, development and evaluation to practical applications in the classroom. Focus: Reading Language and Literacy introduces students to the concepts of contemporary literacy, particularly as it relates to the school setting.
Foundations and Goals in Art Education and Professional Practices in Art Education are sequential methods classes designed to be taken within two semesters of the field experiences. These classes connect contemporary theory and professional preparation to the classroom experience. No more than two semesters may elapse between these classes and the Practicum and Internship I.
