The World Between
Sculptural books by Heejung Kim

Opening Reception: Tuesday, March 20, 4:30 – 7 p.m.
The exhibition will feature approximately 15 sculptural books created
by the artist Heejung Kim in the last 10 years. Inspired by East-Asian
traditions of books in various forms, Kim's books are unconventionally
sculptural, most of which are made of mixed media, such as, found
objects, cloth, pins, and wood. One of the recent books, Reincarnation,
for example, contains numerous eye-shaped sculptures inside a black cloth
wrapper which is covered with thorn-like protrusions.

Curated by Margaret Murphy, the director of the Garage, “Homegirls” will feature artists whose work attempts to shed light on attitudes of family, childhood, domesticity, and the house as living space. The title, “Homegirls,” is a twist on the urban "homeboys" to mean a group of friends or like-minded allies. The exhibition presents artworks created in a wide range of media—paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, installation, and video—by emerging and mid-career artists in the New York/NewJersey metropolitan area.
