Art Teacher Certification: Preschool through 12th grade
The NJCU Art Teacher Certification Program (ATCP) prepares the art student to become a professional Art Teacher for grades Preschool through 12 in the State of New Jersey through a comprehensive approach to art instruction that connects art history, art criticism, and philosophy of art with the production of art. The College of Education Reflective Urban Practitioner Framework of knowledge, skills and dispositions provides the foundation for the program. Teacher Certification in Art P-12 is given by the State of New Jersey after the candidate has passed the Praxis exam Art Content Knowledge with the minimum grade established by the state; completed the required NJCU education sequence with a GPA of 2.75; and completed a degree in Art with the required GPA of 2.75.
Certification Only: Candidates with a BA in Art or a BFA degree from an accredited university or college can enter the ATC program as Certification Only.
Degree with Certification: Candidates pursuing a BA in Art or a BFA degree in any NJCU Art Department specialization can enter the ATC program.
Admission to program
A minimum Grade Point Average of 2.75.
2 letters of recommendation.
Passing grade in the College of Education Writing Assessment prior to Practicum field experience.
Passing grade in the Praxis exam #10113 Art, Content, Knowledge prior to Internship field experience.
Active Student membership in the Art Educators of New Jersey association
Active Student membership in the National Art Educators Association is strongly advised
Portfolio Review: Students must demonstrate a high level of skill in their personal artwork, knowledge of art history, understanding of aesthetic concepts, and proficiency in both verbal and written art criticism
