Political
Science at NJCU
The Department of Political
Science offers several degree tracks including a Bachelor of
Arts in Political Science (general), a Bachelor of Arts in
Political Science-Secondary Education (Social Studies)
Teacher Certification, a minor in Political Science, a minor
in Pre-Law and a minor in International Studies. Recent
graduates from our program have gone on to continue their
education in graduate and law school, while others have
found employment in the public and private sectors.
Mission
Statement
The mission of the Political
Science Department is to provide rigorous instruction in the
traditional sub-fields of political science, and to lead the
broader NJCU community in promoting active civic engagement.
To fulfill that mission, the Department's curriculum,
instruction, and activities prepare students for successful
graduate study and careers in political science, law,
education, government service and several other related
fields. The Department stresses active learning, cultural
diversity, and personal responsibility.
Announcements
- Spring Registration is
underway. Before you schedule an appointment with Dr.
Lieb, please make sure that you have done the
following:
- Review carefully your
academic planning sheet to see what courses you need
to fulfill your General Studies as well as your
Political Science major/minor. Come to the meeting
with a good idea of your schedule and with any
questions and concerns. In other words, do your
homework!
- If you are a Pre-Law
minor, schedule an appointment with Professor Stanton
before you come to see me.
- You may schedule your
appointment BEFORE the designated date that your block
will be removed. Once that date arrives, you can call
Esther (3231) and she will unblock
you.
- Some of you prefer to
have this conversation with me via e-mail. I am happy
to accommodate you, but do make sure that you have all
the proper listing of courses (proper name, reference
numbers, catalogue numbers) in your correspondence.
In sum, be sure to bring (1)
your academic planning sheet outlining your career to
date, and (2) some proposed course of study.
Dr. Lieb's advising schedule
is below and its available on her door and with Esther.
Please come in and sign up, or call Esther who will do it
for you. If you must cancel the meeting, please let
Esther know in a timely manner. Remember that many
classes in the General Studies curriculum fill up quickly
at the popular times, so do make every effort to register
as early as possible.
- October
13: 5:00-7:00 p.m.
October 14: 4:00-7:00
p.m.
October 20: 5:00-7:00
p.m.
October 21: 4:00-7:00
p.m.
Also, remember that in
addition to our political science major, we house three
minor programs: (1) the political science minor offers a
scaled-down version of the major; (2) the pre-law minor
prepares students for law school admissions and law
related careers; (3) the international studies minor is
an excellent choice for those interested in international
issues with an interdisciplinary perspective. Please
consider adding a minor to your academic career and talk
to your friends about these exciting fields of study if
you think they may be interested.
- All majors should consider
doing a Cooperative Experience. The office of career
planning has several interesting positions, some of which
pay a salary. Please contact Mr. Chris Cofone at the
Co-op office as soon as possible (ext. 2180). Even if
you don't plan to do a Co-op this semester, let him know
who you are and what interests you.
- Field Trip to the Council on
Foreign Relations in NYC-Professor Louise Stanton is
taking her students in Issues in War & Peace to the
Council on Foreign Relations in NYC on October 29. At
this event, from 2pm-4pm, the students will meet with
Professor Richard Betts, author of their textbook,
Conflict after the Cold War. Prof. Stanton and her class
would like to extend the invitation to political science
professors, including adjunct professors, and to
interested students to join them for what promises to be
a fascinating conversation with a renowned scholar.
Please email Prof. Stanton is you are interested.

- Welcome back to our returning majors and minors!
The department has some changes for the Fall 2009
semester.
- First, as many of you
know, Donna Axel, our pre-law director, has left the
department for the fresh air of the Colorado Rockies;
join us in wishing her well in her new endeavors. That
said, we are excited and happy to announce that our
new director for the prelaw program is Dr. Louise
Stanton. Dr. Stanton brings a distinguished academic
and private sector record to our campus (see the link
below for a brief biography) and we hope all of you
join us in welcoming her to NJCU.
- Second, Prof. Moran is serving as the Acting
Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for
AY 2009-2010 and will be teaching a very limited
schedule of courses for this year. To help us fill
that that gap, we are pleased to have added two new
adjunct faculty -- Doug Landau and Elçin
Haskolar -- and to have renewed our association with
Thurman Hart. Again, we hope you will join us in
welcoming these new colleagues to our campus.
- The Department has created a
listserv for majors, minors, and friends of the
department. To subscribe to this list, send an email to:
listserv@njcu.edu
with "Subscribe" as the subject and in the text of
the message write:
SUBSCRIBE POLISCI (YOUR
