 Events/Announcements for 2008-2009

  • Congratulations to our graduating seniors!
  • On Friday, 24 April, our colleagues in the Philosophy and Religion Department are sponsoring a workshop on "The Philosophy of Animal Life." The program runs from 10 am until 6 pm, with talks scheduled every half hour (the full program is available here). Prof. Moran is presenting a talk at noon entitled "Zoa Politika: Animals as Metaphor and Model in Political Theory."

  • On Tuesday, 14 April, the University sponsored a program commemmorating the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The program included a presentation by Prof. Moran entitled "Of, By, and For the People: Lincoln's Political Philosophy Today." Click here for the program.

  • On Thursday, 19 March, the Department, the Pre-Law Committee of the Political Science Alliance, and the International Economic Council will be hosting an informational workshop entitled "Getting Into Law School and Becoming a Lawyer: CLEO and PRLDEF Leading the Way" from noon to 1 pm in GSUB room 312.   • On Friday, 26 February, Prof. Joe Moskowitz, President of the New Jersey Political Science Association, chaired the annual meeting of the organization held at the Eagleton Institute of Rutgers University. Prof. Moran, the director of the NJCU/Jersey Journal poll was part of a panel discussing public opinion in the Garden State. Political Science majors Michelle Ackerman, Pat Jarkowsky, Krunal Thakore, and Mike Wisniewski made the trek down the Turnpike to attend the meeting.
  • On January 20, the University has set up two viewing locations for all day coverage of President Obama's inauguration. Join us either in the Gothic Lounge (H-212) or the GSUB for this historic moment in American politics.

  • With the end of the semester approaching, why not take a break from the pressures of final exams and join the Department faculty and majors for a series of roundtable discussions on the 2008 election. Here's the program. All talks are in K-114.

    Wednesday, 3 December, 10-11 am: Image and Media in the Election.
    • Presentations from majors Danielle Friere and Mike Wisniewski on "Body Language and the Appearance in Presidential Elections" and from majors John Roth, Saulo Diaz, and Krunal Thankore, on "Media and the 2008 Election."

    Monday, 8 December, 10-12 am: Internet, Advertising and the Veeps.

    • Presentations from Mark Logan (Philosophy major), Christin Putnam, and Eduardo Padron on "The Internet's Impact on Political Campaigns," Kevin Hanuman on "The Role of the Internet and Lobbying in Campaign 2008," Francesca Bugliaro on "Advertising and the 2008 Presidential Election," Keila Luciano (History) on "The Impact of Vice-Presidential Nominees in the 2008 Presidential Election," Erica Molina (editor-in-chief of the Gothic Times) and Priscilla Perez on "Media Coverage of the US Presidential Election in the US Territories," and Pierre Alexander "Media Coverage of Environmental Issues and their Political Impact."

    • Presentations from Marlen Gonzales (Gothic Times columnist) and Mohamed Elmaksoud (Gothic Times) on "The Youth Vote and the Internet in the 2008 Election," Brandon Givens on "The Impact of the Obama Campaign on 18-24 Year Old Voter Turnout," Abraham Live on "Voter Mobilization and the Media," Charlene St. Victor on "Changes in Candidate Issue Positioning Between Primary and General Elections," and Pat Jarkowsky and Juan Bustos, "Presidential Elections: Electoral College or Popular Vote?"

     

  • On Wednesday, 29 October, the Department conducted a workshop and discussion on the presidential and congressional elections in Room 129 of the Gilligan Student Union Building from 10 to noon.

  • Spring registration is still ongoing. Sign up for advisement with Dr. Lieb. As always, it is an excellent idea to do this early so that you won't be blocked out from any classes. Please make sure that you have the following materials:
    • Your Academic Planning Sheet listing ALL General Studies classes taken and what is missing. (You can find a copy of the Planning Sheet in the Master Course List).
    • A list of the courses that you want to take with reference numbers etc.
    • A list of any questions concerning your schedule.
    • If you hope to graduate in May, 2009, a list of all courses taken so far in your major and/or minor.
    • All pre-law minors should see Professor Axel prior to our meeting. Professors Axel, Moskowitz, and Moran will also be advising if my hours are not convenient for you. You must contact them directly to schedule an appointment.

  • On Monday, 6 October, our colleagues in the Art Department, as part of their year-long "Art and Politics" project featuried a presentation by Illustrator Peter Kuper will speak at New Jersey City University on Monday, October 6 at 5:00 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building Auditorium, 100 Culver Avenue in Jersey City. Admission is free.

    Mr. Kuper is the co-founder of World War 3 Illustrated, a political graphics magazine established in 1979 and for which he continues to serve on the editorial board. He serves as an art director of INX, a political illustration group syndicated through the Web, and has taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York since 1986. He has also taught at Parsons School of Design.

    Mr. Kuper has created covers for Time and Newsweek and his illustrations and comics have been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Mother Jones, The Nation, Harpers, Virginia Quarterly Review, and MAD, for which he has been writing and drawing “SPY vs. SPY” since 1997.

  • The Great Debate was held on Thursday, 2 October in the GSUB Multipurpose Room B. The debate featured NJCU students portraying presidential candidates Barack Obama (Democratic), John McCain (Republican), Bob Barr (Libertarian), and Catherine McKinney (Green) and featured three of our majors: Alex Neilson, Ernst Grand-Pierre, and Pat Jarkowsky in lead roles.

  • Constitution Day was Wednesday, September 17. We presented two two-hour slates of one hour programs in Multipurpose Room C in the newly renovated GSUB! The morning session ran from 9 - 11 and the afternoon from 1 to 3 pm. Festivities included:
    Morning Session

    9 to 9:50: "Your Daily Constitutional" (Prof. Fran Moran; an intro to the Constitution) plus educational games and excitement!
    10 to 10:50: "Voting and the Constitution" (Prof. Joe Moskowitz) Plus educational games and excitement for all!

    Afternoon Session


    1 to 1:50: "Know Your Rights" (Prof. Fran Moran; a tour of the Bill of Rights) plus educational games and excitement.
    2 to 2:50: "Voting and the Constitution" (Prof. Joe Moskowitz) and games!
