Darlene Britt, a demonstration teacher at the A. Harry Moore School, is the recipient of the Employee of the Month Recognition Award for February 2007.

A member of the NJCU community since 1980, Ms. Britt has taught for 26 years in various programs and departments at the A. Harry Moore School. Hired to teach in the EFL Program (Education for Functional Living Program), which serves students ages five to 21 in a pre-vocational setting, she later taught in the Pre-School program. The pre-school program serves students ages three to five and prepares them for inclusion programs in their home schools. Ms. Britt has also worked in the Primary Department with multiple disabled students who are ages five to 10.

Ms. Britt is the Site Coordinator for the Foster Grandparent Program at A. Harry Moore, which is administered by the Salvation Army of Newark. The program is open to persons 60 years old and over, who volunteer their time in the classroom to assist students ages three to seven.

She also coordinates the school-wide Picture Day with Lifetouch Photography, for the students, faculty and staff each year in March.

Ms. Britt has mentored students at NJCU and enjoyed being a cooperating teacher to many junior and senior interns over the past 20 years. She has also taught as an adjunct teacher in the Special Education Department at NJCU.

Ms. Britt received a bachelor of science in special education from the College of New Jersey (then Trenton State College), a master’s degree in early childhood education from NJCU, as well as certifications in education and learning disability teacher consultant certification from NJCU. 

In 2005, Ms. Britt received a Teacher Award from the District 3 V.F.W. and Ladies Auxiliary at its annual awards ceremony. In 2006, she received a Teacher Appreciation Certificate from the New York City Church of Christ, where she has been a member for the past 20 years.

In her leisure time, Ms. Britt enjoys traveling, networking, and being a wedding coordinator.

Ms. Britt resides in Avenel with her 10-year-old son, Thomas.
