
Hilda Merchan, a principal clerk stenographer in the English as a Second Lanugage/Modern Languages Department, is the recipient of the Employee Recognition Award for the month of July.
Ms. Merchan joined the staff of New Jersey City University in 1977. She was originally assigned to the Latin American Studies office and worked there until 1986. She then worked in that department as well as ESL and Modern Languages.
In 1987, Ms. Merchan was assigned to the ESL/Modern Languages Department, where she assists 14 full-time faculty members and 15 adjunct instructors, manages the department office, and supervises student assistants.
A co-founder of the University’s Council of Hispanic Affairs, she has been an active member of the organization since 1982. She is also a member of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Day Committee.
Ms. Merchan lives in Jersey City with her husband Gilbert, who is also an NJCU employee. They have three grown children, Cindy, Sharon, and Marcos. In her spare time Ms. Merchan enjoys reading and writing.
