carolynCarolyn Hunter, RN, BC, BSN, supervisor of New Jersey City University’s Health & Wellness Center, is the recipient of the Employee of the Month Award for August 2007.

Mrs. Hunter began her career at NJCU in 1984 as head nurse in the Health & Wellness Center (formerly the Medical Services Department) and was promoted to associate supervisor II, administrative services, in the Division of Student Affairs in 1997.  

Her responsibilities include management of all programs and services provided by the Health & Wellness Center; her duties are both administrative and clinical. Mrs. Hunter attributes the success of the Health & Wellness Center to great teamwork with an outstanding set of dedicated and supportive co-workers. 

Mrs. Hunter achieved Board Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, in the Nursing specialty of College Health Nursing in 1991. She was recertified in December 2006.

An active Executive Board member of the New Jersey College Health Association for the past 12 years, Mrs. Hunter has held the offices of recording secretary, vice president, director of continuing education, and president, and currently serves the Board as immediate past president. She is also a contributing editor for the Journal of American College Health Association.

Mrs. Hunter has been the recipient of honors and awards, including: the College Health Nursing Excellence Award presented by the New Jersey College Health Association in 2003; the Vice President's Award for Excellence in Service and Community Service, awarded by Dr. Alene Graham in June 2002; and the Mary-Kate Heffern Honorary Scholarship Award from the New Jersey College Health Association in 1997.  She was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau, Kappa Eta Chapter, International Nursing Honor Society in 1988.

A graduate of Holy Name Hospital School of Nursing, Mrs. Hunter went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at New Jersey City University (then Jersey City State College) in 1981. In 2006, she completed a Nursing Certificate Program in Management and Leadership from Drexel University, College of Nursing and Health Professions.

A native of Jersey City, Mrs. Hunter was raised just two blocks from NJCU. Her mother, Myra Amato, was a longtime employee of Jersey City State College who retired from Payroll/ Personnel in 1986. Mrs. Hunter currently resides in Bayonne, with her husband of 19 years, Michael Hunter, who is an employee in the NJCU Housekeeping Department. The Hunters have two children, Lauren, age 15, and Michael, age 13.

Mrs. Hunter has volunteered time at her church, serving on the Pastors' Advisory Council, and has held volunteer offices on the Executive Board of the parents’ association of Saint Vincent DePaul School and was recently named to the Executive Board of the Mother's Association of Holy Family Academy in Bayonne.
