    Professor Claire Miller Monroe has been teaching ESL professionally since 1978, first in a public elementary school and then in an adult program for the Jersey City Board of Education, and later at the undergraduate and graduate school levels.

    Professor Monroe earned her bachelor's degree in Teaching ESL at St. Peter's College and her master's in the same field at New York University. She also completed the coursework toward the doctorate in Language Education at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

    At NJCU full-time since 1986, she has taught every ESL level from elementary to EC-2 and has served as ESL Program Coordinator, ESL Conversation & Writing Center Coordinator, and ESL Program Coordinator. Moreover, she instructs ESL and bilingual teachers in the Multicultural Education Program and occasionally teaches for other departments. Besides performing instructional duties, she has worked on numerous grant and curriculum development projects.

    Besides teaching here, Professor Monroe conducts teacher-training sessions and presents at conference regionally, nationally and internationally. During a recent sabbatical, she taught in Albania and Quebec.
