Immediate Action Needed to Save NJKI Databases

Message from NJ State Library
Message from NJCU Library Director

The following message is posted on behalf of the New Jersey State Library:

Dear NJKI User,

Due to the lack of state funding, the existing multiyear contracts with NJKI database vendors have ended effective February 28. These vendors include Ebsco, Nature, Wiley, Ovid and RefUSA. Journal articles and data are no longer accessible through NJKI for the next four months.  We hope and expect to have an NJKI program available in the '09 state budget to begin July 1, 2008.  We would appreciate your contacting the Governor's office by mail at PO Box 0001, Trenton NJ 08625; by phone at 609-292-6000; or by email go to http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.html, select “Commerce” as your topic, then “Small Business” as your sub-topic, as well as your local legislators (go to http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/members/legsearch.asp to locate their contact information) to let them know what the NJKI databases meant to you in terms of helping you grow your business, conduct your research or earn your degree. We hope you will strike a positive tone as you urge the Governor and local legislators to resume supporting this statewide shared service that had 15 million uses over the past two years while simultaneously saving $68.5 million dollars over retail prices.

Sincerely,

The NJKI Task Force

Message from the NJCU Library Director on 2/29/08:

With a $1 million shortfall, access to the databases is only until the end of this month for all academic libraries in the state. There are no funds from March 1 to June 30, 2008. During
this period, there would be no access to the following databases and even beyond, depending on state funding for July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009:

BIOMEDICAL REFERENCE COLLECTION COMPREHENSIVE
NURSING AND ALLIED HEALTH COLLECTION COMPREHENSIVE
ReferenceUSA
WILEY INTERSCIENCE
YOUR JOURNALS @ OVID (LIPPINCOTT WILLIAM AND WILKINS)

Since databases are so essential for teaching, study and research in many academic programs of New Jersey City University, the Guarini Library has funded as many databases as possible so there would be no interruption in access to the following databases during the same period, and hopefully beyond::

ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER (Funded by the New Jersey State Library until June 30, 2008)
BUSINESS SOURCE PREMIER
CINAHL WITH FULL TEXT
MEDLINE
NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP JOURNALS ONLINE
REGIONAL BUSINESS NEWS

I would like to thank those who tried to help by contacting the governor. WE STILL NEED YOUR ADVOCACY SO THE STATE FUNDING WOULD CONTINUE IN 2008/2009.
