CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS IN AMERICAN ENGLISH AND CULTURE
Two related but independent certificates, one in "American English" and one
in "The Language and Culture of the USA",
are offered for advanced students of the English language who are not
matriculated at the University. Each certificate consists of approximately
three credits in the Program in English as a Second Language (ESL), and 15
credits in regular (Non-ESL) courses. These concentrate on different aspects
of life in the United States such as art, history, sociology, literature,
politics, and music. ESL courses focus on writing, language-learning materials,
accent reduction, and American legends and mythology. A TOEFL score of 500
and completion of secondary school are the main requirements. At least one
14-week semester is required for each certificate. The University can issue
Student Visas. This program provides a broad range of sophisticated instruction
useful to individuals born in the USA or abroad and working in fields such
as business, profession of international affairs, and the arts. Please contact
Dr. Marian Leonor at (201) 200-2174 for an application and further information.
