What is Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL)?

Peer-Led Team Learning is a learning model that engages small groups of students in collaborative problem solving. At New Jersey City University, the Mathematics Department holds several sixty-minute workshop sessions during each week of an academic semester. These workshops are led by peer leaders who are undergraduate and graduate students.

During each workshop, students work through challenging problem sets that have been written by New Jersey City University Mathematics faculty.

Peer leaders take on several roles during the workshops. Peer leaders:

• Encourage students to use various techniques and strategies to solve problems
• Provide suggestions, constructive criticism, and/or positive feedback as student groups are working to derive solutions
• Offer timely assistance, but don't dispense answers
• Set a tone that fosters respect for all points of view
• Ensure that all students are actively participating

The Mathematics Department provides PLTL support for Math 112-Intermediate Algebra and Math 175-Enhanced Precalculus. These workshops are sponsored by a U.S. Department of Education Title V grant: Increasing Capacity in Academic Support Services and Faculty Development."
