    Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, was founded at the University of California at Berkeley in 1919, and serves :

    - to honor those who excel in the study of the Spanish Language and in the study of the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking world;

    - to recognize those who have made Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known in the English speaking world;

    - to encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture;

    - to foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech.

    ΣΔΠ is the largest foreign language honor society in the world, with over 540 chapters, and the only honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish in four-year colleges and universities. The society sponsors a yearly summer scholarship program for its active members with awards for study in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Spain (locations subject to change). Since 1966, ΣΔΠ has been a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, the nation’s only certifying agency for college and university honor societies. ΣΔΠ also presents various awards to outstanding chapters, student members, chapter advisors and accomplished Hispanophiles. Past inductees include Elena Poniatowska, Carlos Fuentes, Fernando Arrabal, Carmen Laforet, Camilo José Cela, Dámaso Alonso and Antonio Buero Vallejo.
