Book on Educational Applications of Podcasting by NJCU Professor Contains Chapters by Student, Alumna
Student-Powered Podcasting: Teaching for 21st Century Literacy by Dr. Christopher Shamburg of Maplewood, an associate professor of educational technology at New Jersey City University, has been published by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
Among the 20 chapters in Dr. Shamburg’s 193-page book are “Garageband Tutorial” by Jeff Humphrey of Jersey City, a graduate student in NJCU’s Educational Technology Program, and "Citizen Journalists" by Katherine Jerome of River Edge, an NJCU alumna who earned a master of arts degree in educational technology last year.
In addition to explaining the technical aspects of podcasting, Dr. Shamburg’s book demonstrates how educators can use podcasting to teach 21st-century skills, ignite interest in new subjects, and apply learning to the real world.
With assessment rubrics, 17 adaptable units, and links to examples, the book leads Mac and PC users through tutorials on the audio editing programs, GarageBand and Audacity, and through an entire project. The book also explores the complex issues surrounding copyright and fair use laws.
The author of National Educational Technology Standards for Students: Units for the English Language Arts and co-author of Teachers as Technology Leaders, Dr. Shamburg has published and presented numerous articles and papers on educational technology.
Dr. Shamburg, who teaches in the graduate program, joined the NJCU faculty in 2001. Before joining the NJCU faculty, Dr. Shamburg taught high school English at Hudson County School of Technology in Jersey City for 10 years. Named “Teacher of the Year” in 2000, he was also the recipient of a Geraldine R. Dodge Award for Teaching Humanities, a Governor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching, and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
