NJCU to Offer Basic and Pre-Intermediate Salsa Courses on Thursday Evenings
New Jersey City University will offer “Salsa Dancing-Basic” and “Salsa Dancing-Pre-Intermediate” on Thursdays, September 17 through November 19.
Offered through NJCU’s Office of Continuing Education, all class sessions will meet in the on the NJCU campus at 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. Registration for each course is $100.00 for individuals or $150.00 for a couple.
“Salsa Dancing-Basic,” which will meet 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., is an introductory course designed for those with neither salsa experience nor a dance background. The course will cover basic steps, the cross body lead, dancing on the line, beginner “shines” and turn patterns, and the leader/follower connection with particular attention paid to timing and musicality.
“Salsa Dancing-Pre-Intermediate,” which is designed for students who have a comfortable, working knowledge of basic Salsa, will meet 7:30-8:30 p.m. The course will cover turn patterns, “shines,” the leader/follower connection, Salsa musicality, and dancing on the line.
For both courses, appropriate dance class attire is required. Shoes with rubber soles, shoes with heels higher than two inches, sneakers, and pants that drag on the floor will not be allowed. Neither class observation nor guests are permitted; only enrolled students will have access to the dance studio.
The instructor for both courses will be Betty Gerena, a dance instructor and television and film actress who has also taught Salsa on 1, Cha Cha, Modern Dance, and Hip-Hop.
