Swimming Courses for Children to Meet on Saturdays
New Jersey City University will offer two sessions of its swimming classes for children aged six to 14 on Saturdays this fall: September 19 through October 17 and October 31 through December 5.
Offered through NJCU’s Office of Continuing Education, all swimming classes will be held in the pool at NJCU’s John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center, Culver and West Side Avenues in Jersey City. Registration for each swimming course is $79.00.
Students may select one of two time slots for each session of “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level I” and “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level II”: 11:00 – 11:50 a.m. or 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level III,” “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level IV,” and “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level V” will meet 1:00 – 1:50 p.m. during both spring sessions.
An introductory course for those who cannot swim or for those with limited ability, “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level I” will help children to feel comfortable in the water and will cover the front and back floats, locomotion and basic rescue skills, and personal safety.
“Beginning Swimming for Kids Level II” will build upon Level I skills and will cover the front and back crawl strokes, the fundamentals of treading water and deep water swimming, and additional self-help and safety measures. Students must have completed “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level I” or demonstrate the skills covered in the course.
During “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level III” children, who must have completed “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level II” or demonstrate the skills covered in the course, will develop confidence in their strokes, swim greater distances, and learn the elementary backstroke. The course will also introduce diving and safety rules.
“Beginning Swimming for Kids Level IV” will introduce the breaststroke and the sidestroke and enable students to swim greater distances using the front and back crawl strokes, learn open turning in deep water, and build upon safety skills. Students must have completed “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level III” or demonstrate the skills covered in the course.
“Beginning Swimming for Kids Level V” will enable students to refine the breaststroke and sidestroke, swim greater distances using the backstroke, and learn additional safety skills, including how to swim when leg cramps develop. Students must have completed “Beginning Swimming for Kids Level IV” or demonstrate the skills covered in the course.
