NJCU to Offer Writing, Math, and Reading Courses for Children on Saturdays
New Jersey City University will offer courses in mathematics, reading, writing, and drawing for children on Saturdays this fall. Registration for each course is $75.00.
Offered through the Kids on Campus Program of NJCU’s Office of Continuing Education, all classes will meet on the University campus at 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City.
Two courses for students in grades five through eight, “Writing in the Digital Age” and “Improving Mathematics Skills,” will meet 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays, September 19 through October 10.
“Writing in the Digital Age” will enable students to bridge the gap between academics and technology and to build writing stamina in a variety of genres, including test-taking formats. Children maintain electronic journals, work within the facets of Microsoft Word, and develop Power Point presentations.
“Improving Mathematics Skills” will help children to develop better math strategies to help them perform better on standardized tests and in school. Students will further their skills with fractions, decimals, and percents and explore techniques for improving their problem-solving skills.
“Learning through Literature” and “Improving Mathematics Skills” for children in grades one and two will both meet on Saturdays, October 3 through October 31.
“Learning through Literature,” which will meet 9:00 – 10:50 a.m., will enable students to develop listening skills to increase comprehension and will use descriptive words and phrases to increase vocabulary. Students with limited language skills will benefit from sharing ideas through brainstorming.
”Improving Mathematics Skills,” which will meet 11:00 a.m. – 12:50 p.m., will utilize games and other tools to help children develop a positive attitude towards mathematics and improve their math skills through practice and hands-on activities. The course will cover addition, subtraction, and word problems.
“Improving Reading Skills” for children in grades five through eight will meet 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays, October 17 through November 7. ”Improving Reading Skills” will use a hands-on approach, manipulatives, and team-taught methods to enable students to expand their vocabulary and increase their reading comprehension, thereby helping them to improve their performance in subjects in which excellent reading skills are essential.
A “Writing Workshop” and “Problem-Solving Made Fun” for students in grades three and four will both meet on Saturdays, October 24 through November 21.
The “Writing Workshop,” a writing enrichment course that guides students through the writing process and builds their confidence to foster a love of writing, will meet 9:00 – 10:50 a.m. The course will emphasizes such writing prompts as open-ended questions, pictures, and poetry. Students will be exposed to a variety of writing strategies through language arts, science, social studies, and mathematics.
“Problem-Solving Made Fun,” which uses manipulatives, games, hands-on activities, and literature to enable children to explore the problem-solving strategies and techniques necessary to solve mathematical word problems relevant to real life experiences, will meet 11:00 a.m.-12:50 p.m. The class is designed to help students sharpen their skills and focuses on conceptualizing and creating meaning in mathematics problem-solving.
