Book on 1858 by Professor Bruce Chadwick Published by Sourcebooks, Inc.
T1858: Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant and the War They Failed to See by Dr. Bruce Chadwick of Randolph, a professor of English at New Jersey City University, has been published by Sourcebooks, Incorporated.
The 355-page book, which contains 17 chapters and includes a bibliography, endnotes, and an index, examines the personalities and careers of seven men on the brink of war and explores the 1858 events that set the collision course between the North and the South.
The book’s seven separate stories include those of Jefferson Davis, who was dying from a syphilis infection in his eye, Robert E. Lee, who was about to resign from the military, and William Tecumseh Sherman, who was reduced to running a roadside stand. All stories are linked to the central figure of the time: President James Buchanan, who was raving over perceived threats to his power and doing nothing about the debates over slavery that were erupting throughout the country.
Dr. Chadwick is the author of more than 20 books, including the history books, The General and Mrs. Washington: The Untold Story of a Marriage and a Revolution, The First American Army: The Untold Story of George Washington and the Men Behind America’s First Fight for Freedom, George Washington’s War, Brother against Brother, The Two American Presidents, Traveling the Underground Railroad, and The Real Civil War.
He has also written many books about baseball, including Baltimore Orioles, Baseball’s Hometown Teams, Giants, Infamous Trials, John Madden, The Chicago Cubs, The Chicago Cubs Trivia Book, The Real Civil War, The St. Louis Cardinals, When the Game Was Black and White, Boston Red Sox, Bronx Bombers, and Cincinnati Reds.
