New Jersey City University Receives New Jersey Smart Workplaces Award

New Jersey City University has received a New Jersey Smart Workplaces Award.

Issued by the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), New Jersey Smart Workplaces Awards recognize New Jersey enterprises that help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by voluntarily creating significant and innovative alternative commuting programs.

New Jersey employers whose commuter benefits reach the State standard of excellence qualify for either platinum, gold, silver, or bronze awards. New Jersey City University was among the recipients of bronze awards.

New Jersey Smart Workplaces Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the implementation of programs that promote commuting alternatives for employees. Eligible programs include free or low-cost bus passes, telecommuting, carpool matching, vanpool subsidies, bicycling, and other alternatives to drive-alone commuting.

New Jersey City University offers Transit Check, a program that enables employees to purchase mass transit passes with pre-tax dollars. The University also offers bus and train tickets.

These programs were instituted at the University by Robert Piaskowsky, NJCU director of human resources, who worked closely with the Hudson Transportation Management Association, a non-profit organization funded by the federal government through the NJDOT.

A voluntary partnership of participating employers, the NJDOT, NJ TRANSIT, and the State's Transportation Management Associations (TMA), the New Jersey Smart Workplaces (NJSM) program benefits communities by providing cleaner air, reduced traffic congestion, and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Inspired by the Best Workplaces for Commuters recognition program of the Environmental Protection Agency, the NJSW was developed by the NJDOT and TMA in 2006.

News releases by Ellen Wayman-Gordon, and Kelly Resch, Office of Public Information.
