NJCU Certification Program for Information
Security Professionals Becomes Fourth in N.J. to Be Certified by
National Agency
New Jersey City University has become the fourth institution of higher education
in New Jersey to receive certification for its “Information Security (INFOSEC)
Standard 4011—Under Authority of the National Security Agency,” a
certification program for information security professionals, from the Committee
on National Security Systems.
Certification by the national agency ensures that
the NJCU certificate program complies with the National Training Standard for
Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals.
Offered by the University’s Department of Professional Security
Studies of the College of Professional Studies, the NJCU Program
consists of three courses that focus on the importance of information
security and the impact technology has in the field of security: “Computer
Security I,” “Computer Security II,” and “Computer
Security III.”
An introductory course, “Computer Security I” covers
such topics as history vs. current methodology, the capabilities
and limitations of communications, automated information systems,
media, networks, and security policies.
The intermediate course, “Computer Security II,” covers
such areas as operational security, policy, roles and responsibilities,
cryptography, transmission security, and the components of the
national training standard.
The capstone course, “Computer Security III,” covers
such topics as the national standard, planning/management, policies/procedures,
security planning, risk management, contingency planning/disaster
recovery, physical security measures, personal security practices
and procedures, software security, network security, administrative
controls, auditing, and cryptosecurity.
Those who earn certification
as information systems security professionals can work as network
security specialists and investigators who aim to reduce such crimes
terrorism, identity theft, and computer hacking.
Students may enroll
in the certification program only or as part of undergraduate studies
in any major, including professional security studies. NJCU is the
only institution of higher education in New Jersey to offer a bachelor’s
degree in security.
