International Society for Technology in Education Publishes Book by NJCU Professor on Using Technology in the H.S. English Classroom
National Educational Technology Standards for Students: English Language Arts Units for Grades 9-12 by Dr. Christopher Shamburg of Maplewood, an associate professor of educational technology at New Jersey City University, has been published by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
Dr. Shamburg’s book offers a holistic and reflective approach for using technology to re-shape and re-energize the high school English classroom. The book presents 12 language arts units that integrate technology into compelling, standards-based lessons. Suggested units include fanfiction and creative writing, teaching Shakespeare with film and images, using blogs and social bookmarking to facilitate independent reading projects, podcasting, and creating and sharing digital video.
The 253-page book includes introductory chapters on research trends, school reform, and copyrighting tailored for English teachers and interdisciplinary links, teaching tips, lesson extenders, assessment rubrics, sample projects, Web resource links, activities, and handouts for each unit.
The co-author of Teachers as Technology Leaders, a book published by the ISTE in 2006, Dr. Shamburg has published and presented numerous articles and papers on educational technology.
Before joining the NJCU faculty in 2001, Dr. Shamburg taught high school English at Hudson County School of Technology in Jersey City for 10 years. Named “Teacher of the Year” in 2000, he was also the recipient of a Geraldine R. Dodge Award for Teaching Humanities, a Governor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching, and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
