Tablet PC Initiative at New Jersey City University

Tablet PC Tablet PCs are lightweight, highly mobile computers the size of a legal pad. Users interact with them by tapping, writing, or drawing on a touch screen with a stylus, and they are capable of wireless access to the Internet or the campus network. Tablet PCs are full-blown computers with plenty of memory and lots of storage space. They also run Windows XP and all the usual applications.

In March 2003, the Center for Instructional and Technological Innovation at New Jersey City University began an initiative to explore the potential impact of Tablet PCs as a teaching tool. Four New Jersey City University faculty members received a Tablet PC with basic productivity software and initial training on its use. Staff from the Center for Instructional and Technological Innovation will be working with them on strategies for using the Tablet PC in the classroom and providing assistance in preparing materials. The participants have agreed to make the Tablet PC the primary computer for their teaching role, using it regularly in at least one course. They will also participate in a study of the project, which will include class observations and sharing opinions on their use of the Tablet PC.
