The Gardner/Donnelly Memorial Scholarships

New Jersey City University has the honor of awarding memorial scholarships in memory of FDNY Firefighter Thomas Gardner (Haz Mat 1), and FDNY Lt. Kevin Donnelly (Ladder 3), both firefighter scholars and Fire Science Department faculty members who gave their lives in the rescue of more than 25,000 souls on September 11, 2001.

Thomas Gardner, FDNY Firefighter

Adjunct Professor in the Fire Science Department, a decorated FDNY Firefighter, and recognized national expert in the field of Hazardous Materials training and operations. A member of the NJCU Fire staff for 3 ½ years, he rewrote and taught the NJCU Fire Hazardous Materials I & II level courses, and developed the department’s initial on-line courses.

Kevin Donnelly, FDNY Fire Officer

Instructor in the Fire Science Department, a highly decorated FDNY Fire Officer who specialized in high-rise fire and emergency operations and training. As a member of the NJCU Fire staff, he was responsible for the development of, and served as the lead instructor in, the NJCU Fire Fire Safety Manager’s Certificate Program.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS


AWARD AMOUNT: Each award will be equivalent to the in-state, undergraduate full-time tuition and fees per semester. The current value of this scholarship is $3,275.00 for the fall 2005 semester.

ELIGIBILITY: The scholarship is focused on undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of 64 college credits. The duration of the award will not exceed four semesters and does not include summer sessions.

CRITERIA:
• 64 credits (minimum completed at the time of application).
• Registered for a full-time credit load (12 credit minimum) at the time of application and during the semesters the scholarship is awarded.
• Declared major in Fire Science.
• 200-word essay in which students display an understanding of and commitment to Fire Science.

APPLICATIONS: Obtain applications from the Office of Financial Aid. Applications are usually available in May. A 200 word essay is required as part of the application. The deadline for submitting completed applications is usually June.

EVALUATION: A five-member committee will review each application. The committee will include the Scholarship Coordinator (Chair), two members of the Business Administration Department, and two members of the Fire Science Department. All decisions of the committee are final. All applicants will be notified by mail of the committee’s decision within two weeks of completion of the selection process.
